The Information Centre for Health and Social Care, which published the data, has no comparable statistics for the same period the year before. However, for the year ending March 31 2010 11,811,651 NHS sight tests were performed in England. That was an increase of 533,000 (4.7 per cent) on the previous year.

Of the total number of tests between April and September, 6,113,281 were carried out by optometrists, 18,754 by OMPs and 192,285 were conducted in patients' homes or residential homes as domiciliary visits. The number of domiciliary visits over the previous year ending March 31, 2010 was 373,715.
