Novartis has won a Court of Appeal decision in Paris to uphold the French portion of its European 'Nicholson' patent for extended-wear lenses against Johnson & Johnson, which was attempting to overturn the intellectual property protection.

A consultant ophthalmologist at Southampton General Hospital's eye unit warned that Halloween traditions such as apple bobbing could lead to eye injuries and infections.

Parwez Hossain said that staff in eye casualty had seen children and adults turning up with corneal scratches and blunt eye injury from the impact of apple bobbing. 'And in addition to these types of injury, there is the possibility of people contracting potentially serious corneal infections from dirty water or residue of liquids if bowls aren't cleaned properly.'

He added that lanterns, night flares and glow sticks were also often the cause of dangerous but avoidable accidents.
