Hammersmith MP opens vision centre for the homeless

A new Vision Care for Homeless People facility at Shepherd's Bush Market Broadway Centre was opened recently by Andrew Slaughter, MP for Hammersmith.

Slaughter praised the dedication of the volunteers, saying: 'This is an inspiring project and a model which can be rolled out across the country. Such a service is set to be in greater demand as our homeless population increases due to financial pressures.' The MP is pictured here with volunteer optometrist Elaine Styles.

The charity recently celebrated the 5,000th dispense from its centres in London and Birmingham and is now looking at expanding to other cities. Optometrist and founder Harinder Paul said: 'We provide a thorough eye examination and new glasses whenever they are needed, in an environment where homeless people feel comfortable.'
