10,030,000 sight tests were paid for by Health Authorities (HAs) in England and Wales in the year to March 31 2000 - 34 per cent more than the total for the year ending March 31 1999 (7,469,000).
Almost all the increase of 2,561,000 sight tests over the previous period is due to the extension of eligibility for NHS sight tests to those aged 60 and over from April 1999. (3,546,000 sight tests were attributable to patients aged over 60, but some of these patients would have previously been eligible on other grounds). - Vouchers for 3,937,000 pairs of spectacles were reimbursed by HAs in England and Wales in the year ending March 31 2000, a decrease of 3 per cent from 4,064,000 in the year ending March 31 1999.
