Hopes of cutting waiting times for hearing loss appointments in Northern Ireland have diminished after a pilot scheme aimed at tackling the problem was put on hold.

The idea, in which patients could use a high street provider for hearing tests but have their bill paid by the health service, was announced last November.

Chief executive of the National Community Hearing Association (NCHA) David Hewlett said: ‘Cancelling the pilot is a retrograde step for citizens. We will be writing to the Department of Health to see how we can ensure people with hearing loss are able to access responsive and ongoing care.’
