Herefordshire optometrists help tackle NHS backlogs

Andrew McCarthy-McClean finds out how optometrists founded the Border Health Alliance to appease the cataract crisis in their county

Patients in Herefordshire have benefitted from a new cataract pathway that offered treatment in a timelier fashion within the community.  

The Border Health Alliance (BHA) was formed to tackle long NHS waiting times that were exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Darren Smith, optometrist and director at the BHA, told Optician: ‘Herefordshire’s always had a very good relationship between community optometry and trust ophthalmology. But in spite of the best efforts of the local eye department, they couldn’t keep up with the numbers and the wait was ever-increasing. The result of that was patients were having to travel quite considerable distances out of the county to have their treatment.’
