A Glasgow-based eye care-focused technology company claims to have produced a superior contact lens that will reduce production costs by as much as 50 per cent.

Over the past 18 months, Ocutec has developed a thermoplastic hydrogel polymer and manufacturing methodology which it says will reduce the usual 15-step method of production to five steps.

The company has raised a total of £282,000 to develop the prototype lens - £200,000 from Dundee-based Discovery Investment Fund and £82,000 in public money from the Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Executive.

Ocutec's co-CEO Dr Roderick Bowers told Optician: 'We have designed a material chemistry with tremendous attributes as a contact lens that can be used with manufacturing techniques to create high volumes at a low cost. This really is an extremely exciting venture because it is rare to get innovations in both contact lens materials and manufacturing techniques.'
