High street hit

The high street continues to suffer poor trading according to the British Retail Consortium's latest figures.

Its Retail Sales Monitor claimed that July's trading for the UK's retailers was the worst in 10 years, with consumers remaining cautious.

'July was much worse than June,' said a spokesman, 'with retail sales falling 1.9 per cent on a like-for-like basis compared to a year ago.
