Finnish scientist and ophthalmologist Jukka Moilanen (left) was recently awarded the inaugural Vannas Fellowship for research in international eye care excellence in Helsinki.

The fellowship medal and $20,000 prize was awarded by Scientia Professor, Brien Holden, of the Institute for Eye Research (IER) Sydney.

Antti VaVannas Medalnnas comes from a dynasty of Scandinavian ophthalmologists. He met Professor Holden 30 years ago in Nagoya, initiating a major research collaboration on refractive surgery.

The Vannas Fellowship provides the opportunity to experience the value of scientific collaboration and has attracted donations of over $600,000 worldwide. Pictured with Moilanen are (l-r) Meri Vannas, Eeva Vannas, Antti Vannas, Brien Holden and Tomi Vannas.
