Just under 10.5 million eye examinations were paid for by the NHS in England for the year ending March 31 2007. This is the highest ever number for England, a rise of 1.3 per cent on the previous year and just over a million higher than seven years ago.

The statistics, published this week by The Information Centre for health and social care, revealed that eye tests carried out in Wales were just under 680,000, up 0.3 per cent.

More patients are receiving eye care at home in England than ever before, with 310,000 home visits in 2006/07, an increase of 5.4 per cent on last year. There were 19,000 domiciliary visits in Wales, 5 per cent higher than 2005/06.
