Emma White reports on how the industry supported this year’s Myopia Awareness Week campaign message to ‘put myopia management into action in practice’

Act now, see tomorrow, was the theme behind Myopia Awareness Week 2024 (May 13-19), the global initiative organised by the Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI) and Review of Myopia Management. Myopia Awareness Week was launched in 2018 to help eye care professionals (ECPs) understand the latest science and research and bring the issue to the attention of patients, parents and other stakeholders.

According to BHVI, myopia is the most significant eye health threat of the 21st century, an assertion that has not changed since the publication of the late Brien Holden’s seminal research paper in 2016. It still estimated that 50% of the population will be myopic by 2050, increasing the risk of ocular complications – maculopathy, retinal detachment, cataract, glaucoma – irrespective of the level of myopia.
