A multimedia online programme in Advanced Communication aims to help Scottish optometrists manage and contain challenging situations and interact with patients whose ability to communicate is impaired.
Commissioned by NHS Education for Scotland and funded by the Scottish government, the course combines distance learning and practical, self-managed exercises enabling optometrists to develop communication skills without leaving their practice. There is a multimedia presentation from consultant psychiatrist Joanne Watkins, and panel discussions with experienced optometrists. Topics include making the most of history and symptoms, maximising effectiveness of referrals, working with patients with cognitive/communication problems, building knowledge of conditions which affect communication and resolving complaints more effectively.
