Following the failed eBay prosecution the General Optical Council has released a statement regarding internet sales, including the mail-order sales of glasses and contact lenses.

Following the failed eBay prosecution the General Optical Council has released a statement regarding internet sales, including the mail-order sales of glasses and contact lenses.

'The Council has heard that the working group on non face-to-face sales of optical appliances has considered opinion from Queen's Counsel regarding the legal framework for these sales,' said a spokeswoman.

'Work is now under way to commission expert opinion as to the circumstances in which supervision of sales requires clinical judgement, and therefore face-to-face contact with a patient.

A full discussion of the approach took place in private session to avoid the possibility of prejudicing the outcome of any legal proceedings.'
