Janet Silver OBE, former principal optometrist at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, died on March 25, aged 74.

Silver joined Moorfields in 1964 and, in the 1970s, introduced the concept of the low vision unit to the hospital. Following her retirement in 1995, her work took her overseas where she used her skills to help those in developing countries.

In June this year she was expected to receive honorary life membership of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

A more detailed obituary will be published in next week's Optician.
