Attitudes towards fitting presbyopes with contact lenses improved by fitting guide says Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson Vision said its multifocal contact lens Acuvue Fitting Calculator has been used more than 10,000 times in its first six months of operation and is helping practitioners fit more contact lenses to presbyopes.

A survey of the calculator, launched to support the firm’s 1-Day Acuvue Moist Multifocal lens, found that 82% of users said the calculator would make them more likely to fit multifocal contact lenses.

Ian Pyzer, professional education & development manager at Johnson & Johnson Vision said: ‘Historically, fitting multifocal contact lenses has been seen to be a challenging and lengthy process. But with the Acuvue Fitting Calculator, eye care professionals are able to simplify the process when it comes to optimal lens power selection.’

The calculator aims to make fitting easier. This is achieved by entering best vision sphere or subjective refraction; eye dominance; and optimal near add. The fitting calculator also provides fitting tips to further increase fitting success. The UK was the first territory to get the calculator which will now be rolled out around the world starting with the US.

John Meyler, senior director, worldwide professional education at Johnson & Johnson Vision said the data from calculations taken so far shows the increasing interest amongst eye care professionals to fit multifocal contact lenses. This is an under represented group among contact lens wearer with 78% of presbyopes yet to try contact lenses, he said.
