Johnson & Johnson releases digital gradign appJohnson & Johnson Vision Care has released an app-based grading scale which grades a number of ocular presentations and evaluates progression.

The free Eye Grading app is a digitally optimised version of Professor Nathan Efron’s Grading Scale and has been designed to support ECPs improve patient care through what the company said was enhanced clinical precision. Conditions can be closely monitored and managed with real-time screen animations and record keeping functionality.

The app develops on the fixed approximate five-point scale of traditional hardcopy grading scales and enables users to record the severity of each patient’s condition down to 0.1 increments. It can evaluate nine common ocular presentations: bulbar redness, corneal staining, lid redness, lid roughness, limbal redness, meibomian gland dysfunction, pterygium, pinguecula and cortical cataract.

Severity levels can be graded by scrolling through real-time touch animations and clinical change can be evaluated side by side by comparing levels of ocular presentation in increments. Clinical assessments can be presented to patients and reports can be exported to practice records.

An assessment guide also includes slit lamp illumination techniques, corneal inflammation versus. infection, signs of oxygen deficiency along with staining and lid assessments.

‘Grading scales are used extensively in optometric practice for a variety of purposes,’ said Sheetal Patel, manager of The Vision Care Institute .

‘We are dedicated to helping patients maintain healthy eyes and healthy contact lens wear so understanding, monitoring and grading contact lens related conditions is key. This new app can assist Eye Care Professionals by improving and increasing consistency of clinical records and by helping keep their patients satisfied in contact lenses.’
