A US federal judge has backed Bausch & Lomb by stating that there is no scientific basis to link the recall of the company's ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution in 2006 to thousands of patients' non-fungal eye infections.

Associated Press (AP) reported this week that following a hearing in June on the admissibility of expert evidence, the federal judge in South Carolina said there was no reliable scientific basis for arguing that ReNu with MoistureLoc caused around 1,024 US lens wearers to contract assorted bacterial, viral and parasitic infections.

B&L has reportedly paid more than $250m to date to settle 600 lawsuits linking the recalled contact lens solution to Fusarium keratitis.
