The economic downturn has adversely affected both optical industry and retail segments, with a strengthened focus on costs and slow and erratic growth, according to research by Cambridgeshire-based prescription house Eye Index.

The analysis follows similar research by the firm in 2009, commissioned to support its strategic planning. While some businesses were seeing growth, retail and manufacturing optical businesses were predicting a tough 2011. The sector had responded to the challenges with stronger retail marketing, more value-added packages from manufacturers and keener price-led high street promotions.

'With an increasing number of retail optical outlets pulling out of on-site glazing, there are opportunities for the more experienced and specialist Rx houses to expand their customer base, although this market remains competitive,' it said.
