Lasik scare

Contact lens researcher Professor Brien Holden has raised 'serious concerns' about the safety of Laser in situ keratomileusis (Lasik).

Speaking at last month's Bausch & Lomb's European Symposium in Prague, he accused surgeons of not telling the truth about complications with the technique. Professor Holden said he was concerned about reports of corneal ectasia and trauma-related complications such as dislodged flaps, following surgery. The risks of Lasik had been publicly highlighted in Australia, where 10 patients were suing ophthalmologists over unsuccessful surgery. Dundee ophthalmologist Professor Charles McGhee said that there were 'bad surgeons' and revealed there were, to his knowledge, 15 legal cases relating to Lasik pending in the UK.
