Ms Campbell, a former lecturer in the University's School of Applied Science, described the new clinic as 'trail-blazing' and hoped that other departments would follow its example. 'The clinic represents the kind of public/private partnership that the Government wants to encourage,' she said. Ms Campbell added that the new facility would benefit local people, particularly pensioners who she hoped would take advantage of the free NHS eye test. Also in attendance was Bob Hughes, general secretary of the Federation of Ophthalmic and Dispensing Opticians whose members will donate &\#163;500,000 towards Anglia's new optometry department. The latest &\#163;100,000 from FODO's educational charity was presented to the university by Jerry Lewis, UK country manager for Vision Express. Optometrist Dr Steve Taylor, who drew up the syllabus, was appointed visiting professor and Mr Hughes was awarded an honorary doctor of science.
