According to the commissioning body, the Leeds Glaucoma Equity Profile project, billed as the first of its kind in the UK, uses routinely collected information to plan and direct local eye care services to parts of the Yorkshire city where they are needed most.

Andy Cassels-Brown, consultant ophthalmologist and consultant in community eye health for NHS Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said: 'The study we have conducted will provide valuable information to help us prevent sight loss from glaucoma and address the needs of those most at risk of visual impairment. I also believe that it will lead to even greater integration between front-line primary care health services and optometry services and secondary care.'
