Leightons boss to take on four-day endurance challenge

Ryan Leighton to complete ironman-length triathlon fundraiser

Ryan Leighton, CEO of Leightons Opticians & Hearing Care, will complete an ironman-length triathlon fundraiser over four days in Sicily.

So far Leighton has raised over £3,000 for the youth charity Big Change.

The cause has also been supported by Leightons Opticians & Hearing Care’s Andover branch, led by branch manager and dispensing optician Andy Izzard, who raised £230 through a cake sale.

His challenge will begin with a 3.3km ocean swim, followed by a 125km mountain bike ride over two days. The final day of the challenge consists of a half marathon run to within 10km of Mount Etna’s summit, where participants then hiked the final 10km to the crater ridge.

Leighton has made a strong recovery since being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2011, having quickly returned to his role leading the 34-practice independent chain.

He said: ‘The Strive triathlon is also a challenge that I've entered for me. Some might say it's a strange way to celebrate a five-year milestone surviving cancer and they might be right.

‘I'm also taking on this challenge for all the other people that we know and love who are affected by cancer.’
