The Macular Disease Society has been awarded £131,243 from the Big Lottery Reaching Communities Fund to finance further development of its Eccentric Viewing programme around the country.
The money will fund the Society's 'Train the Trainer - Eccentric Viewing courses' that enable volunteers whose vision has been damaged by macular disease to learn the technique which can greatly improve their ability to read and in turn teach these skills to other individuals.
Donations to fund the expansion of the programme have also come from The Freemasons' Grand Charity (£50,000) and the Garfield Weston Foundation (£20,000).
'This scheme will revolutionise the lives of younger working people with macular diseases and greatly enhance the quality of life of older people with age-related macular degeneration,' said Tom Brembridge, chief executive of the Macular Disease Society.
