Visual function is improved with lutein alone or lutein together with other nutrients, it was announced at a press conference held his week in Frankfurt.
The claim was based on the latest findings of the LAST (lutein antioxidant supplementation trial) published in the journal Optometry (2004, 75) last month.
Project leader Dr Stuart Richer of Chicago described how the patients taking either a multivitamin and mineral supplement with lutein or those taking lutein alone showed increases in the macular pigment density compared with the placebo group.
