Macular Society records government’s coronavirus communications

The Macular Society has created an accessible version of the government's letter to the public

An audio version of the government’s coronavirus announcements has been made available for people living with a visual impairment by the Macular Society.

The charity explained that the letter and information about the pandemic, which were sent to 30m households across the UK, were not available in an accessible format.

In response, Cathy Yelf, chief executive of the Macular Society, recorded an audio version that is available on the charity’s website.

Speaking about the letter, Yelf said: ‘This is an anxious time for everyone and having access to all the information available is more important than ever before. While it is possible to request an accessible version of the letter in your required format, we do not know how long this will take to process. In the meantime, it could leave a lot of vulnerable people feeling more isolated and anxious than is necessary.’
