New research by MacuShield highlighted concerns about the UK’s eye health dietetics and the importance Brits placed on their eyesight and its impact on wellbeing.
The report found that 93% of Brits believed sight problems affected overall wellbeing, leading to headaches (73%), stress or anxiety (67%), mood or mental wellbeing issues (54%) and increased risks of falls (40%).
Yet, despite 63% of Brits acknowledging that a good diet could support eye health, only 9% admitted to eating a healthy diet, according to the report.
Public health nutritionist and co-author of the report Dr Emma Derbyshire noted: ‘Only a third (33%) of adults aged 19 to 64 are achieving their 5-a-day of fruit and vegetables, meaning two thirds of the nation could be short of nutrients including essential vitamins and minerals for eye health.
‘But bridging gaps with appropriate targeted eye supplements may be worth considering alongside a healthy diet with at least 5 fruit and vegetables a day as well as following a healthy lifestyle,’ she added.
