Four Manchester-based optical practices have agreed to contribute towards a study into how early diabetic neuropathy diagnosis compares with retinopathy results among 400 diabetes patients.
Murrays Opticians, Stotts Opticians, Arrowsmith Opticians and Maskell + Associates the Optometrists were all taking part in the study, with results expected by the end of the year.
Latest figures showed diabetes was prevalent in six per cent of the UK’s population and cost the NHS over £1.5m an hour, or 10 per cent of the NHS budget for England and Wales.
Dr Mitra Tavakoli at the University of Manchester’s Centre for Endocrinology & Diabetes, said: ‘Manchester pioneered work for establishing the technique of corneal confocal microscopy (CCM) – a new, non-invasive eye test which can detect diabetic neuropathy in limbs in its earliest stages and used to image the eye – as a tool for diagnosing diabetic neuropathy at its early stages.
