Marching for equality

Blind and partially sighted campaigners have been commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Blind March.

Blind and partially sighted campaigners have been using their daily exercise during the pandemic this month to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Blind March.

The event in April 1920 saw hundreds of blind and partially sighted people travel on foot from Leeds, Manchester and Newport to London in order to demand fairer rights.

Organised by the National League of the Blind, people on the march met Prime Minister David Lloyd George, which led to the passing of the Blind Person’s Act 1920.

On its 100th anniversary, the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) is asking people to use their one exercise a day during the coronavirus pandemic to remember the event.
