Mask-associated dry eye

Eye dryness and irritation from mask wear may become a problem for a large percentage of the population

A recent review conducted by the Centre for Ocular Research and Education (Core) concluded that eye dryness and irritation from mask wear may become a problem for a large percentage of the population.

Mask-associated Dry Eye (Made) can be caused by the upward flow of air from loosely-worn masks, with air over the surface of the eye can creating conditions that accelerate tear film evaporation.

Director of Core, Professor Lyndon Jones, commented: ‘Face masks are crucial in the fight against Covid-19, and ECPs are well-positioned to provide patients with advice on appropriate wear in order to maximise eye comfort.’
