A claim that a formula baby milk can improve the vision of infants by US-based manufacturer Mead Johnson is being challenged in Brussels by a British MEP.

According to The Independent, Glenis Willmott is invoking European Parliament powers to question the decision of an EU Standing Committee to authorise the eyesight claim. The declaration by Mead Johnson relates to the benefits of its milk products containing a fatty acid called docosahexanenoic acid (DHA). Found in small amounts in breast milk, it is a recognised factor in the development of infant's retinas. But Willmott claimed there was no consistent independent evidence that the synthesised version used in formula had the same benefits.
