Misquoted

Mike Cooper (optician, Letters, September 11) in suggesting that I advocated changing patients to more up-to-date varifocals without discussion not only misquotes me but clearly did not read what I wrote. I simply commented that patients should be given an informed choice.

In suggesting that NHS frames and lenses were the best things since sliced bread, Mr Cooper really excels himself. Yes, frames were available in a multiplicity of colours and sizes but they did nothing to encourage the wearing of spectacles, particularly among children. The challenges of good dispensing are as pertinent today as they were 10, 20 or 50 years ago. If dispensing is undertaken by a qualified person, it is more exciting, more fulfilling and certainly, with the multiplicity of lenses available, more challenging than ever before. Its time for some members of the profession to stop living in the past and get with it.
