Moorfields to manufacture sclerals

Moorfields Eye Hospital’s optometry department will manufacture and issue scleral contact lenses to patients from 2024, which it hoped would mean patients received lenses faster.

The London eye care centre partnered with non-profit healthcare organisation, BostonSight, to become the first in the UK to produce their scleral design.

Sarah Canning, head of optometry at Moorfields Eye Hospital, said: ‘Being able to produce these scleral lenses in-house will give our optometrists flexibility to effectively manage ocular surface disease and corneal ecstasia to provide comfort and relief to patients and help improve their vision.’

Moorfields said scleral lenses could take six to eight weeks to manufacture because they are custom designed but hoped its new services would be faster and create a more efficient treatment process.
