Shadow home affairs minister Edward Garnier is the latest MP to be told of the importance of eye care on visiting his local OO.
Optometrist Peter Warren told the politician many practices in England could curtail their NHS work unless an improved GOS contract was produced.
He said that the NHS fee only covered 'bog standard' eye exams, despite most outlets having advanced equipment to provide patients with a more comprehensive series of tests. He feared that thousands of OOs could leave the NHS.
The Harborough MP said: 'Just as we try to ensure the population has regular dental check-ups - which is now almost impossible thanks to the government killing off NHS dentistry - so we should encourage people to have regular eye checks.'
