Wirral MP Esther McVey and Specsavers in Birkenhead have joined forces to promote Royal Sun Alliance's 'Are You Fit to Drive' campaign (News 16.09.11). 'Vision is a key factor in road safety but it's one that's often ignored,' said McVey on her reasons for campaigning for better drivers' vision awareness. 'The truth is no one really knows for certain how many people are "driving blind". A fifth (21 per cent) of drivers who were surveyed have struggled to read road signs, and when the findings were applied to the total driving population, over five and a half million people with glasses or contact lenses admitted to having driven without them,' she added. McVey, pictured with store director Shane Canning, got involved with Specsavers after working with Brunel University, TV doctor Mark Porter and Royal Sun Alliance who were researching the effects of driving with poor eyesight.
