Local MP and shadow minister for optics Jamie Reed urged his constituents to book an eye test during a recent practice visit.
'It is really important that everyone takes good care of their eyesight; a lot of sight loss can be prevented through regular check-ups,' he said.
Reed visited Specsavers in Whitehaven, Cumbria last week (February 24). The visit was part of the Optical Confederation's ongoing campaign to reduce the high level of avoidable sight loss in the UK.
Research commissioned by the RNIB estimated that 1.8 million people in the UK were living with sight loss and this figure was set to increase by 115 per cent to nearly four million by 2050, largely due to the ageing population.
