Contact lens sales have crept up thanks to the development of lenses for presbyopes and despite economic challenges, according to latest figures.
The Association of Contact Lens Manufacturers (ACLM) reported a 2 per cent revenue rise in 2011 compared to the prior year. It meant the UK contact lens market was worth £231.1m last year, through the sale of over 583 million products.
Daily disposables comprised 58 per cent of this market value, with soft frequent replacement lenses 8 per cent, silicone hydrogels 28 per cent, soft traditional lenses 2 per cent and rigid lenses 5 per cent.
The ACLM reported that the number of people using silicone hydrogel lenses had increased 10 per cent in the last 12 months, with these lenses now worn by 1.3 million people.
