Multiples pull NOTW spend

Multiples

Specsavers Opticians and Boots Opticians pulled advertising from the News of the World before the Sunday newspaper was shut down amid phone-hacking allegations.

Both of the multiples put campaigns on hold, although Boots was going to run an advertisement in the Fabulous magazine supplement because it was 'printed some time ago'.

However, upon closing the 168-year old newspaper, owner News International decided not to run any commercial advertisements in its final edition - giving space away to charities instead.

Advertisers from automotive, retail and telecommunications sectors also boycotted the tabloid after claims that a private investigator working for the tabloid had intercepted personal voicemail messages of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler and victims of the 7/7 terrorist bombings in London.
