An optometry student at City University is understood by Optician to have been among the victims of a racially aggravated assault on Muslim students near the university in St John Street, London.
On November 5, the students were allegedly attacked with metal poles, bricks and sticks as well as suffering racist abuse from a group of around 30 white and black youths, according to a report in The Guardian. During the incident, two students and a passerby who tried to intervene were stabbed. In the week preceding the attack, a Muslim student attending the university's prayer room was abused and attacked. City University security has raised its profile at prayer meetings and has also increased the number of campus patrols. Islington Police is also undertaking extra surveillance in the area.
