Children who move from spectacle lenses to contact lenses have been found to show a small increase in myopia.

The latest findings of the Correction of Myopia Evaluation Trial (COMET) published in this month's Optometry and Vision Science (2009, 86(6), 741-747) showed how a group of children aged between six and 11 years were assessed over five years of spectacle wear after which they could opt for spectacles or CLs and assessed one year later. The contact lens group showed an average myopic progression of -0.28D as opposed to -0.14D for the spectacle wearing group. The researchers emphasised thatthis is statistically significant but 'clinically inconsequential'.
