Earlier this week a team at Specsavers in Trongate, Glasgow became the first to have their work with autistic patients acknowledged by National Autistic Society (NAS), Scotland.
NAS’ Autism Friendly Award was given to the practice for reducing the difficulty and distress many autistic people feel during eye tests. This work included the team’s introduction of weekly quiet clinics and a chill out area. It also distributed a pamphlet to explain what happens during an eye test, and it provided autism awareness training for its staff.
‘We are honoured to be recognised as the UK’s first autism-friendly optician,’ said David Quigley, store director for Specsavers-Trongate. ‘Learning about autism and the small adjustments that can be made in-store to help support autistic customers has been truly insightful.’
