BCLA launches own awards scheme

The BCLA hosted its first ever awards ceremony at the Brighton conference last weekend.
Around 1,000 people attended the Gala Dinner on Saturday June 4, where the BCLA Awards for Tremendous Achievement (Baftas) were presented.
Associate professor Lyndon Jones was singled out for the 'Excellence in contact lens research' award for his significant contribution to the science of contact lenses.
Other nominees were Dr Philip Morgan, research manager at Eurolens Research, Manchester and Dr Ralph Stone, a senior director of Alcon Laboratories.
The award for 'Excellence in contact lens manufacturing' went to Johnson & Johnson Vision Care. Also nominated were CIBA Vision and No 7 Contact Lens Laboratories.
The 'Excellence in contact lens practice award' was presented to Brian Tompkins, an independent optometrist in Northampton. Runners-up were Shelley Bansal, a DO in Middlesex and Ken Pullum, an OO in Hertfordshire.
The BCLA also announced the appointment of new president Dr James Wolffsohn. Wolffsohn, who replaces Anna Sulley, has served on the BCLA council since 2001 and has held several positions including website team, communication team and conference team leader.
'It will be a great honour to lead the BCLA over the year ahead,' he said. 'Our conference remains the biggest and most prestigious contact lens meeting in the world and continues to grow at a rapid pace.'
