Thinning of the fovea might be linked with macular holes, a common cause of sight loss in the elderly and high myopes.
A retrospective study published in this month’s American Journal of Ophthalmology looked at OCT data from eyes with a range of eye diseases including epiretinal membrane, retinal vein occlusion and macular hole.
The values for both foveal thickness and central foveal thickness, as measured using the Cirrus OCT, were found to be significantly thinner in the macular hole group, suggesting a measurable anatomical difference that might help predict pathology.
