
A new genomic test offered at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) has enabled Moorfields ophthalmologists to successfully treat a case of treatment-resistant uveitis.
Consultant ophthalmologist Carlos Pavesio explained the new metagenomics service used cutting-edge genomic sequencing to identify the bacteria and viruses present in a patient’s sample.
He continued: ‘It had never been used before in the UK for ophthalmology but, working with the GOSH team, we were able to identify the cause of Ellie’s persistent symptoms as leptospirosis (pictured) – specifically a strain endemic to South America.’
Following diagnosis, the patient received targeted treatment and has remained symptom-free since.
