New GOC chairman outlines challenges

After starting his tenure as chairman of the General Optical Council in January, Dr Geoff Harris told Optician that the economic climate, revalidation, issues facing DOs, independent prescribing and Europe were some of the challenges facing the regulator.

After starting his tenure as chairman of the General Optical Council in January, Dr Geoff Harris told Optician that the economic climate, revalidation, issues facing DOs, independent prescribing and Europe were some of the challenges facing the regulator.

He said the Council would continue to ensure professional standards are maintained but must also recognise the tough economic conditions and their impact on businesses and practices.

'For instance we have a working group looking at revalidation. I think it's really important that the process is carried through in a way that gives enhanced confidence to the public, but which is proportionate, reasonable and enforceable. In doing so we shall ensure that developing the revalidation regime is one that's subject to a full consultation with the profession.'
