New leadership at UK and Éire Glaucoma Society

Glaucoma UK has appointed its first female president for its UK and Éire Glaucoma Society (UKEGS) alongside a new president-elect.

Nishani Amerasinghe, pictured, ophthalmologist at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, succeeded Professor Gus Gazzard as president, and Edinburgh-based ophthalmologist Dr Andrew Tatham has become president-elect.

‘It’s a particular pleasure to take over as president of UKEGS as Glaucoma UK celebrates its 50th year. I am looking forward to continuing our joint legacy of excellence in the care of our patients and collaboration with peers in the UK and worldwide,’ Amerasinghe said.

Joanne Creighton, chief executive at Glaucoma UK, added that the charity’s vision was to end avoidable sight loss from glaucoma and UKEGS played an important role in achieving that goal.
