Essilor International has reported a profit attributable to equity holders of €202.4m, up 2.1 per cent for the six months ending June 30 2009. This is compared to the €198.3m it recorded during the same period in 2008.

The French lens manufacturer attributed its success to new product launches. It cited the successful launch of products such as the new Crizal Forte anti-reflective lens around the world and the Essilor Transitions VI variable-tint lens in Europe for its sustained growth. However, it reported a 'disappointing' first quarter performance in instrument sales.

Earnings per share increased to €0.98 from €0.96 reported in the same period in 2008. The trading statement also revealed that the lens company's net cash flow increased by 12.5 per cent to €99m. In terms of expansion, the company said it had acquired or increased its holdings in 11 companies, including the acquisition of Croydon-based Wholesale Lens Corporation in the UK.

Looking to the second half of the trading year, Essilor said it would continue to grow by leveraging the quality of its products and services directly to opticians, backed by an acquisitions strategy that extends across all regions.

The third quarter revenue results will be announced on October 22.
