Newmedica urges ‘quick wins’ for eye health

Newmedica has called on the government to implement ‘quick wins’ for patients with eye conditions in its submission to the consultation on the 10-year NHS plan. 

With ophthalmology accounting for 10% of NHS England’s waiting list, Newmedica identified three key priorities for immediate action. 

These were public transparency in waiting times by subspeciality condition; the removal of barriers preventing true patient choice; and an equitable approach to commissioning. 

‘Optometrists need a simple mechanism to facilitate referrals into ophthalmology care,’ said Nigel Kirkpatrick, clinical director at Newmedica. 

He added: ‘The good news is that the NHS and independent sector together can deliver positive changes within months for the benefit of patients and the health service.’
