SeeAbility calls for urgent overhaul of the system for monitoring sight problems

NHS England’s national sight testing and funding system is letting down one million people with learning disabilities in England, according to vision charity SeeAbility.

Together with Locsu, SeeAbility has called for an urgent overhaul of the system for monitoring sight problems among people with learning disabilities, launching a campaign called Children in Focus.

A sight testing service by SeeAbility has carried out 1,142 sight tests in special schools, dispensing 331 pairs of spectacles and training 262 school staff.

The results were published in a report presented at an event in parliament earlier this month, hosted by Lord Holmes of Richmond. Outgoing minister Alistair Burt MP was thanked during the event for pledging to back the case for eye care reform from the backbenches.

A new equal right to sight parliamentary petition (click here) has also been launched online, targeting 10,000 signatures.
