The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has confirmed this week it is on target to publish its long-awaited guidance on the management and treatment of glaucoma on April 22.
The draft for consultation, Glaucoma: diagnosis and management of chronic open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension, was published last year andraised concerns that hospital eye departments could be overwhelmed by referrals.
The draft suggested that only those with the College of Optometrists' Diploma in Glaucoma should manage COAG or hypertension above 21mm Hg (News, February 19, 2009).
On the same day of the release of the guidance, an All-Party Parliamentary Group on eye health and visual impairment will meet to discuss the scope of the guidance and its implications.
