Glaucoma
Optometrists' ability to exercise clinical judgement when referring patients with suspected chronic open-angle glaucoma (COAG) has been recognised under a new glaucoma quality standard.

The first glaucoma quality standard was published by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) on March 31 to support the implementation of the NICE guideline (CG85) published in April 2009 (News 30.04.09) on the management of COAG, suspected COAG and ocular hypertension.

Difficulties with the interpretation of the 2009 guideline led to a dramatic increase in the number of referrals to the Hospital Eye Service, which tested hospital capacity and led to delayed appointments for patients (News 06.11.09).
